Wayne Rooney hails shock England return against USA admitting playing for Three Lions was 'greatest honour of career'

SunSport exclusively revealed Roo is coming out of international retirement to face USA for his 120th and final Three Lions cap.

Rooney, 33, will be named in boss Gareth Southgate’s squad for next week’s fundraising friendly to play against his adopted country — after joining DC United in June.

Wazza, the Three Lions’ 53-goal record scorer, said: “Playing for England was the greatest honour of my career.

“So winning my 120th, and final, cap will be a particularly special moment. It’s fitting that it will be against the USA.”

England fans woke up yesterday to our story that Rooney is to be honoured at Wembley a week on Thursday.

The arch at the national stadium will be lit up in the colours of the Wayne Rooney Foundation, whose children’s charities will benefit from the proceeds of the USA match.

Former Three Lions skipper Roo will link up with Southgate’s squad TWO YEARS after his last appearance, in a 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley.

FA chiefs had wanted to honour the striker after his retirement in August 2017 but World Cup planing made it impossible.

Roo added: “I have been hugely impressed with the progress of this young England team. I hope while I am with the squad I can pass on some of my experience.”

Rooney, who guided DC United from bottom of the MLS to the play-offs, is scheduled to leave the England squad after the USA match as Southgate prepares for the Nations League clash with Croatia at Wembley on the Sunday.

Southgate said: “We’re fortunate circumstances allowed us to acknowledge Wayne’s immense contribution to England.”
