Australian club ‘offers Usain Bolt contract’ after his preseason goals

Usain Bolt’s deal: Australian club ‘offers Olympic sprint star a contract’ and hope modest amount will be enough for him to resist richer offers abroad

  • Usain Bolt has reportedly been offered a contract by the Central Coast Mariners
  • The reported offer came despite the Olympic champion missing Sunday’s game
  • He was believed to instead be in Melbourne considering his contract options
  • His manager Mike Mulvey has attempted to douse rumours of any deal though

Sprint king-turned-soccer trialist Usain Bolt has reportedly been offered a contract by the Central Coast Mariners 10 days after he stunned the world by scoring twice in a friendly match.

Despite Bolt failing to show in Brisbane for the side’s 1-1 draw with the Roar on Sunday, The Australian reported the 32-year-old was in Melbourne considering his options after being tabled a deal.

Reports of the offer surfaced during the contest, with Mariners boss Shaun Mielekamp reportedly having tabled a contract with Bolt’s management over the weekend.

Executives at the Mariners would not comment on whether a deal had been offered, with Mielekamp saying he wanted ‘to concentrate on the game (against the Roar).’

He has also reportedly been offered a two-year contract by Valletta FC in Malta – a deal he is believed to have rejected to get a better deal with the Mariners.

Central Coast coach Mike Mulvey did his best to douse speculation of an imminent deal, though, openly doubting whether the sprint king is worthy of a start.

‘It’s news to me,’ Mariners coach Mulvey told Fox Sports after the game.

‘We’ve got Connor Pain, Tommy Oar, Michael McGlinchey, we’ve got Matt Simon and Ross McCormack – we’ve got a very good front third, so I don’t know anything about that.’

He also attempted to deflect questions regarding Bolt’s future at the club before conceding he would find it tough to break into the side.

‘You have a look at our front line today and you wonder whether he could get into any of those positions, wouldn’t you?’ he said.

‘I do appreciate how important this story is for the rest of the world.

‘You’re just talking about speculation, I don’t know anything about what you’re talking about and that’s the honest truth.’

The reports come after Western Sydney Wanderers coach Markus Babbel told German newspaper Blick Bolt wouldn’t make the A-League grade ‘in 100 years’.

Babbel said; ‘The A-League receives much attention from him. But, honestly, I can not take that seriously.

‘I saw him play…for all that love, that’s not enough in 100 years.’
