Manchester United stars arrive back for training but Luke Shaw nowhere to be seen after suffering concussion on England duty

Left-back Shaw was due at Carrington for treatment after suffering concussion when his head thudded onto the Wembley turf in Spain's 2-1 Uefa Nations League win.

But as United stars rolled up in their luxury cars the 23-year-old was nowhere to be seen.

Having spent 18 months out of the picture at international level until Saturday, Shaw won't mind a couple of hours out of the lenses at United.

And he still hopes to recover in time for United's Premier League clash at 100% side Watford this weekend.

Medics kept Shaw at England's own training complex, St George's Park in Burton, for checks on Sunday.

The FA confirmed he would then return to United rather than stick with the Three Lions' squad for Tuesday's friendly against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium.

And Shaw will be in good company at Carrington.

Centre-backs Phil Jones and Chris Smalling drove in today as they battle to revive both their England and Old Trafford careers.

Smalling, at least, was back in favour for United in last weekend's 2-0 win at Burnley, ahead of Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly.

Wideman Antonio Valencia seemed to have the most anxious expression of all the players at their wheels as he turned up this morning.

But perhaps that was only because he caught a glimpse of his bright green cap in the car mirror.

Juan Mata gave his fellow discarded Spain midfielder Ander Herrera a lift.

And they might have to gee each other up on the field too – as they try to regain a regular place under boss Jose Mourinho.

Shaw, meanwhile, has been cheered by the volume of well-wishing from fans and players, including messages from Spain skipper Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal, whose aerial challenge flattened him and led to lengthy treatment.

Carvajal tried in vain to find Shaw after the Wembley match.

So he got Shaw's number from Spain's United keeper David de Gea and then texted him.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson admitted the Three Lions had "feared the worst" when they saw Shaw's head smash into the ground.

But now it seems Shaw is hoping for the best – an instant return with United.
