Bodyguard has become a massive smash hit for the BBC but its creator has confirmed that there are still no firm plans for a second series.
Despite the critical acclaim and record-breaking audience numbers, writer Jed Mercurio has said that he’s not had that all-important conversation with the channel about a follow-up.
“I really don’t know,” he told Metro about the possibility of a second series.
“The approach to it was definitely that we would just focus on this series and if we’re fortunate enough it’s successful and the BBC wants to do more, and we can find a way of setting up production, then yes definitely I’d be open to the idea.
“But there’s been absolutely no discussion about a second series yet, there’s certainly no plan to do a second series yet until we’ve had that conversation with the BBC.”
That mirrors what Jed told Digital Spy after the broadcast of that storming first episode.
“I’m not projecting that far in the future,” he said at the time.
“I think it’s very hard to do that, particularly because there are no guarantees that something will get recommissioned.”
He added: “You just don’t know, so it ends up being something that is best done, in my view, retrospectively.
“If you find yourself in the fortunate position where you’ve got a second series, or a third, or whatever it is, and there is stuff from the past that can serve a function, then I think that’s the best way to do it.
“I think the problem with putting things in a first season that have no relevance to the first season is that you can end up making something quite difficult to follow.
“It feels like things don’t quite knit together and so you lose the pace and the narrative drive that you should be trying to go for with a thriller series.”
But worry not, the sixth and last episode of the first run will be an extra-long finale, clocking in at 75 minutes to tie up all those loose ends.
Bodyguard continues tonight (September 9) at 9pm on BBC One.
