Man, 33, guilty of murdering his dementia-suffering gran, 94, by slitting her throat with a bread knife in her care home

Antony Jennings killed his 94-year-old dementia suffering gran after walking into her home carrying a bag of knives.

Ruby Wilson, 94, was found bleeding in her chair by staff after receiving several cuts to her neck on November 29 last year.

Antony tapped a nurse on the arm and said, "I'm sorry… I just killed my nan", adding he didn't "want her to suffer anymore".

The court heard Jennings was found with a large bread knife and another smaller knife in a back pack – one had blood on the handle.

Mrs Wilson, who was said by her family to love crocheting, dressmaking and bingo, had "a number of separate cuts", and the wound to her neck had divided an artery and vein.

Emergency services raced to Forest Place Nursing Home in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, at around 1.20pm but Ruby was confirmed dead four hours later.

A post-mortem examination gave the provisional cause of death as an incised wound to the neck.

Detective Inspector Julie Gowen said: “This is a particularly sad and tragic case and my thoughts are very much with Mrs Wilson’s family.

"The events of November 29, 2017 have been devastating for the family of Ruby Wilson and Anthony Jennings and this has been a tragedy from every angle.

"A jury has deemed that Jennings was not suffering from diminished responsibility at the time he took his grandmother’s life.

"It is accepted that Jennings had been diagnosed with a mental health condition and was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time.

"But while there is empathy towards his mental health, he remains wholly responsible for Ruby’s death and went to the care home that day with the intent to end her life. This is something he will have to live with."
