Kids as young as four to get mental health checks at school as 'resilience' made part of curriculum

Teachers will be trained to carry out "mental wellbeing" assessments as part of the national curriculum.

Building resilience will also form a compulsory part of the curriculum.

The PM will announce that a new annual 'State of the Nation' report will be published every year on World Mental Health Day to highlight the trends and issues in young people's mental wellbeing.

It is part of the Government's effort to put mental health on a par with physical health and academic attainment as ministers bid to build resilience.

Schools will be given tools to help them measure their students' health – and then identify ways of tackling problems.

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

It doesn't discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It's the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes. And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet, it's rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun has launched the You're Not Alone campaign. To remind anyone facing a tough time, grappling with mental illness or feeling like there's nowhere left to turn, that there is hope.

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, over the course of this week, we will tell you the stories of brave survivors, relatives left behind, heroic Good Samaritans – and share tips from mental health experts.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let's all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others. You're Not Alone.

The Government has pledged nearly £2 billion to help tackle mental health problems in schools.

The PM said it was wrong that while half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, just a third are given the right treatment at that age.

Speaking to mark World Mental Health Day, Mrs May said: “We can end the stigma that has forced too many to suffer in silence. We can prevent the tragedy of suicide taking too many lives. And we can give the mental wellbeing of our children the priority it so profoundly deserves."

The Sun launched its You're Not Alone campaign earlier this year to help prevent deaths from suicide.

Every 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.
