Confirmed coronavirus deaths in the United States doubled in two days, surpassing 2,000 Saturday evening, according to states’ health data.
The death toll has increased rapidly, with about a month passing between the country’s first death and its 1,000.
The numbers climb as officials across the US desperately try to quell the spread of the outbreak.
President Donald Trump Saturday floated a mandatory two-week quarantine and travel ban for New York City, the epicenter of the nation’s outbreak, and the surrounding area — only to walk back the idea later in the night.
“A quarantine will not be necessary,” Trump tweeted, adding that a travel advisory would suffice.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo had steadfastly disagreed with the concept.
“It’s a preposterous idea, frankly,” Cuomo told CNN on Saturday evening,
There are currently more than 121,100 COVID-19 cases reported in the US, with more than 52,400 reported in New York State.
