A DRIVER split a pal’s Ford Focus ST in two after crashing it at twice the speed limit.
Uninsured Andrew Clegg, 34, borrowed the £25,000 car a day before it careered into a bus shelter at 60mph.
He and passenger Daniel O’Connor escaped serious injury, Burnley magistrates were told.
Tracy Yates, the prosecutor, told the court O' Connor said the defendant went on the wrong side of the road to overtake, braked heavily, lost control and hit the shelter.
Ben Leech, defending Clegg, said: "I think it's fair to say he was somewhat taken aback by the power and the speed at which the Ford goes."
Clegg, who passed his test five months earlier, admitted dangerous driving and failing to stop in Whitworth in November.

He got six months’ jail, suspended for a year, and an 18-month road ban.
He must pay car owner Brett Doherty £15,000. and is expecting a bill of around £10,000 from Lancashire county council for damage to the bus shelter.
Clegg was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
