Theresa May snubbed BBC hit The Bodyguard — about a female Home Secretary plotting to get into No10

The PM switched off the Sunday night hit after 20 minutes, saying it was too close to home.

Speaking during a trade visit to Africa she said: “I watch TV to unwind – I'm not sure a drama about a female Home Secretary is the best way for me to do that."

Line of Duty star Keeley Hawes plays the powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague in the steamy political thriller.

But obvious comparisons have been drawn with the fictional character and the previous two female Home Secretaries – Theresa May and Amber Rudd.

The up-and-coming MP has her eyes on Downing Street – in a obvious similarity to Mrs May's rise to power.

But last week Hawes revealed she had “very much” drawn inspiration for her acting from Ms Rudd – who was forced to quit in April over the Windrush scandal.

Speaking about her time filming the six-part racy drama, the ex-model, 42, said: “Obviously at the time Amber Rudd was the Home Secretary, so we were aware that there might be those parallels that were going to be drawn.”

She added: “We’re very much not playing Amber Rudd.

"That wasn’t what we were going to do. But, she’s a very good example. She was brilliant for me to research.”
