Terrifying 40ft-high ice tsunami bulldozes homes, trees and street lights when powerful winds toss ice chunks through town

Astonishing footage shows large boulders cascading over a retaining wall of Lake Erie in Ontario, Canada, closing off the Niagara River Parkway.

Incredibly, the ice keeps on coming, forming a wall of icy boulders within seconds that continues to grow.

The bizarre phenomenon was caused by a windstorm that led to ice floating on the river to spill onto the shore and roadway above.

He said the ice had pushed about 150 feet inland and was "starting to bulldoze trees and street lamps" by the time he left.

Incredible photos also showed huge mounds of ice crashing against people's homes in the town of Hamburg, New York, which is south of Buffalo.

There authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for Hoover Beach as the ice crept right next to the lakefront buildings.

Officials asked the public to stay out of the area and said fire crews would be going door to door to check on residents, CNN reported.

The storm has downed trees and knocked out power to as many as 625,000 people in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast.
