This is the heartwarming moment PETA workers rescued a dog after finding it stranded and alone on a porch amid floodwaters caused by Hurricane Florence.

PETA said it found the ‘terrified’ animal outside a home in Lumberton, a town in North Carolina that was inundated with water after the river Lumber broke its banks.

Staff took the dog, who is a male, to a staging area set up by emergency workers so that it could be moved to a nearby shelter.

The dog will now be held for 30 days so its owners can come and claim him before being put up for adoption.

PETA has been taking a boat to some of the worst-affected areas after Florence in an attempt to keep animals safe.

The organization has uploaded multiple videos of workers rescuing cats and dogs from flooded homes after they were left behind.

Millions of animals have been killed by floodwaters from Florence after poultry and pork farms in North Carolina were inundated.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture said that 3.4million chickens and turkeys along with 5,500 hogs drowned after the barns they were being kept in flooded.

Sanderson Farms, a major poultry producer in the state, said it lost about 1.7 million chickens after flooding at more than 60 of the independent farms that supply its poultry processing plants.

PETA later suggested that the male dog was returned to his owners and they were ‘monitoring’ the situation, though the exact circumstances remain unclear

In addition, about 30 farms near Lumberton have been isolated by flood waters, hampering the delivery of feed to animals. The lack of food could cause additional birds to die if access isn’t restored quickly.

Lumberton was inundated with water after the nearby river Lumber burst its banks, swamping almost 1,000 buildings in the area.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality said on Thursday that conditions remain so poor across the state that it is impossible to estimate the impact because inspectors have been unable to visit the hardest hit areas.

‘Water is still rising, flooding is widespread, and lives are still in danger,’ EPA Region 4 Administrator Trey Glenn said, according to a media release.

‘The government’s first responsibility is to protect lives and the health of the citizens impacted.’
