- Five University of Portsmouth students narrowly avoided the collapsing ceiling
- Alan Phillips, 20, a geology student, captured dramatic collapse on his phone
- He said he went to inspect when he saw crack appearing so he pulled out phone
A student has filmed the shocking moment when the living room ceiling in his university house dramatically collapsed.
Alan Phillips, 20, said he was ‘chilling out’ upstairs yesterday when one of his housemates heard a crash.
He went downstairs to investigate and pulled out his phone to film as another crack began to appear.
Suddenly another section of the ceiling came away, sending a huge section of plaster board plummeting to the floor and spraying debris across the room.
Alan Phillips, 20, said his estate agent sent around people to clean the mess yesterday

Alan and his housemates – all fellow Portsmouth University geology students – got out of the way in time and were unhurt.
He told Mail Online: ‘I took out my phone because I thought ‘Oh sh*t it’s going to go!’
‘It literally happened 30 minutes after the plumber left.
All of a sudden the cracks got bigger, and before we knew it the ceiling had caved in.’
He explained: ‘We were chilling out upstairs playing video games when my housemate heard a bang downstairs.
‘A bit of the ceiling collapsed and I went in to inspect then we heard it cracking so we got out of the way.’

The five students had just moved in to the property a week prior before complaining to their estate agents about a leak.
The boys are all due to start lectures for third year on Monday but will have to wait up to a week for the ceiling to be repaired, according to their estate agents.
The 20-year-old from Sittingbourne, Kent, said a plumber came around to turn off the students’ water and 30 minutes after he left the dramatic collapse took place.
He said: ‘I laughed because I found the experience quite surreal, plus I caught it on camera which was hard to believe, I usually see the funny side of things.’

He added that his estate agent acted fast to send around someone to clean the substantial debris.
One of two bathrooms in the private let is situated above the damaged ceiling and the students have been told not to use it for fear of even more leakage.
He and his housemates are not without water and have access to an alternative bathroom.
Alan said he and his housemates haven’t yet discussed compensation with the estate agents who charge the occupants £340 each per month for the property.
