A sweet toothed shoplifter who was caught with 28 stolen chocolate bars stuffed in her bags has been locked up.

Amy Kelly, 34, took the bars of Dairy Milk, along with three packets of chicken and Dairylea cheese, from Sainsbury’s just moments before she was arrested by police in Darlington town centre, County Durham, on Tuesday.

After intercepting Kelly, officers searched her bags and found the items, worth £58 in total.

She had also stolen two Lenor Scent Boosters and cleaning products from Savers, worth £44.

The prolific shoplifter was well known to police, who said they have previously offered help to Kelly to change her behaviour.

Kelly, from Darlington, was charged with three counts of theft from a shop and remanded in custody to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Appearing before the judge, Kelly pleaded guilty to theft offences and was jailed for 14 weeks.

Inspector Matt Plumb, from Darlington Neighbourhood Police Team, said: ‘Amy Kelly is a well-known thief who continues to offend despite repeated help and support offered to her by our Offender Management Unit and other agencies to change her behaviour.

‘We will not tolerate people like her who commit these types of offences.

‘Retail crime is far from being a victimless crime; it hurts businesses that must grapple with higher costs and lost stock, resulting in an increase in prices for us all.

‘As a force, we are continuing to tackle this type of criminality by carrying out proactive patrols, pursuing offenders and working with our partners and local businesses to try and prevent offenders from committing these offences in the first place.’

The serial shoplifter narrowly missed a prison sentence back in 2013 after a judge gave Kelly her ‘final, final, final chance’ after she was given a suspended sentence at Teeside Crown Court, The Northern Echo reported.

Back when she was 24, Kelly was told that she needed to take responsibility for her own actions when she was caught stealing groceries and alcohol from a Tesco supermarket.

Just three months before the incident, the local paper reported Kelly was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after stealing from the home of a partially-sighted man in Darlington.
