President Trump’s primetime address on immigration Tuesday night drew a big audience – but the Democratic response by Sen. Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dealt him a ratings blow.
The nine-minute speech from the Oval Office drew a combined 28.1 household rating in metered markets on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CNN, Fox News and NBC, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The following quarter-hour, including analysis and the Pelosi-Schumer rebuttal, averaged 29.3 across the same networks, a bump of about 4 percent.
Complete ratings for Trump’s speech and response will be available later in the day.
CBS had the largest audience among the broadcast networks for the speech and rebuttal, with just over 8 million tuning in, pending updates.
NBC drew 7 million, ABC 4.43 million and Fox 2.56 million.
Meanwhile, the double act by Pelosi and Schumer from the Capitol crushed Trump by 26 percent on CNN and 15 percent on MSNBC, Deadline reported.
The two Democrats, who stood side-by-side awkwardly to deliver their response, were widely mocked online, with some comparing them to the creepy twins from the horror flick “The Shining” and to the farmer couple in the famous painting “American Gothic.”
And in another blow to the ratings-obsessed president, his speech and the Democrats’ response were perfectly matched on Fox News Channel — his favorite network.
