Royal fans hilariously compete for Harry and Meghan’s attention in Melbourne

The people of Melbourne were out in full force to welcome Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to their city.

Day three of the overseas Royal Tour saw the parents-to-be head to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where they were greeted by hordes of adoring fans.

Some had been waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who greeted as many members of the public as they could during their visit.

But a few people really stood out from the crowd – and there’s a hilarious reason why.

Several creative royal fans had made banners to wave in the air when Meghan and Harry arrived, in the hopes of winning the battle for their attention.

And for one, it certainly had the desired impact.

University student India Brown held a sign which read: "Been here since 4am, loved you since I was 8."

Prince Harry spotted her handiwork and came over to say hello, causing the 19-year-old to get emotional.

The teenager burst into tears, prompting Harry to break protocol and give her a hug.

Various others also took signs along to the event.

One dedicated fan named Shelley brandished a large pink banner proclaiming: "Harry I wagged school in 1983 to meet your parents."

In Australia, ‘wagged’ is a slang word for ditching something, so the lady ditched school to meet Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Shelley had also created a special hat for the occasion, adorned with a large photo of the royal couple.

Another sign in the crowd announced that waiting for Harry and Meghan was "worth the detention".

This was next to one which read: "Fresh Prince with RED hair" – a joke about the Will Smith show, Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Someone else had clearly been watching Meghan’s old episodes of legal drama suits, as their sign featured a play on words about the show.

They wrote: "Pregnancy ‘Suits’ you."

A large yellow sign hung on the railings in front of three young school girls simply begged: "Please stop here".

After speaking to fans and being showered with gifts, Harry and Meghan headed to a community café for lunch.

They also visited a local school and took a tram ride to the beach, where the parents-to-be joined children for a beach clean.

At the end of the day, the pair headed back to the airport where they were seen off by The Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau.
