Prince Harry stutters saying the word 'baby' in first speech since Meghan Markle's pregnancy news

The future dad will welcome a baby with Meghan Markle in spring next year, with the announcement made just hours after the couple landed in Australia.

Thousands turned out in Sydney to get a glimpse of the couple before the future parents were whisked to a reception at Admiralty House.

Speaking to the crowd gathered at the reception, Prince Harry, 34, said: "We're both absolutely delighted to be here and really impressed to see people serving beer and tea at an afternoon reception in true Aussie style.

"Genuinely, thank you for the incredibly warm welcome and a chance to meet so many Aussies from all walks of life."

But the seasoned public speaker appeared to let the nerves get the best of him as he added: "And we genuinely couldn't think of a better place to announce er.. the.. upcoming baby.. be it a boy or girl."

It comes as the sixth in line to the throne is reportedly "happier than he has ever been" as he prepares for the role of dad.

Sources claimed to The Daily Mail the prince was an "emotional wreck – but in a good way" since finding out the couple would become parents.

A source added: "It is something he has wanted for a long time, and he couldn't be happier. He is so protective of her."

Prince Harry was seen keeping a close eye on his wife as they chatted with excited Australians yesterday, holding her hand and putting a protective hand on her back.

Kensington Palace yesterday confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's happy news, with Meghan saying the couple were "very excited".

The couple also seemed thrilled with their first baby gift – a toy kangaroo and its joey.

Meghan stunned in white during their first full day Down Under, showing just a hint of a baby bump.

And the 37-year-old showed off her motherly instincts as she greeted kids who had flocked to Sydney Harbour for the chance to meet the couple.

The former American star was also seen chatting to Australian singer Missy Higgins, who was cradling her own newborn daughter, Luna.

They made the most of their first day in Australia, meeting koalas and echidnas before being taken on a boat ride through Sydney Harbour.

The couple first started to tell family members they were expecting at Princess Eugenie's wedding at St George's Chapel in Windsor on Friday.

It is understood Meghan has already undergone her 12-week scan.
