PM's key ally Sir Mike Penning brands Chequers plan as 'dead as a dodo'

Ex-minister Sir Mike Penning, who helped set up her 2016 leadership campaign, has called the PM “deluded” if she thinks she can persuade Tory Eurosceptics to back her deal.

He added that she is playing Russian roulette with the country and treating her MPs like “children who belong on the naughty step”.

Ex-Brexit Secretary David Davis will also today accuse Mrs May of being a bigger menace to voters than Brussels.

He will claim the PM is “devoid of democracy” by trying to railroad her compromise plan through the Cabinet and Commons.

Mr Davis will add that “for me, the Chequers plan was always a non-starter,” and insist he will unveil more ambitious plans shortly.

But the Best for Britain campaign said: “He’s more like the captain of the Costa Concordia, abandoning a ship he steered into disaster.”

Mr Davis’s successor Dominic Raab yesterday admitted Britain would not have control over its manufacturing regulations if Chequers passes.

Custom bid gets late axe

EUROCRATS shelved threats to escalate a customs row with Britain at the last minute amid claims they tried to humiliate the PM.

Brussels pulled a planned announcement that it would step up legal action against the UK over £1.8billion in alleged unpaid dues.

No10 officials had accused it of attempting to embarrass Theresa May as she jetted out to Salzburg.

EU officials announced yesterday “no decisions” had been taken.

And it emerged a leaked Tory memo circulating among MPs suggests Mrs May will be forced to stand down soon after the Brexit deadline, with a list of potential successors.

Meanwhile, sources claim Tory bosses have whitewashed the word “Chequers” from their conference in a bid to see off a rebellion.

HQ denied a formal ban but were unable to explain why none of the 400 events in their official conference guide contained the word. They later admitted “suggesting” to one organiser by email it should not be used.
