Our picturesque beachside town has been turned into a 'war zone' – tourists are too scared to come here | The Sun

A PICTURESQUE beachside town has been turned into a 'war zone' – and tourists are too scared to go there.

Businesses around Gyllyngvase Beach and nearby Swanpool Beach in Falmouth, Cornwall, have reported incidents of anti-social behaviour, assault and even arson.

Falmouth's main beach in front of the Co-Op on Cliff Road has become a no-go zone during half-term, while barbecue smoke is said to have taken over Swanpool Beach.

Swanpool Beach Cafe was almost set on fire when a disposable barbecue was left in a wooden bin.

The popular business wrote on Facebook: "Tonight we had a very close call. 5 more minutes and the whole cafe would have gone up.

"All because someone put a disposable BBQ which was still alight in our bin. Even though there is a metal BBQ bin at the top of the beach.

"Huge thanks to the people who ran around dousing it with sea water and called Falmouth Community Fire Station – you saved our business!"

The manager of local hotel Membly Hall, Bev Andrew, described Gyllyngvase Beach as a 'war zone'.

"It's not a pleasant area for visitors to take a stroll and many people have told me they find it intimidating and like a warzone, after all this is an area of outstanding beauty," he told the Daily Star.

"As local planning is now not allowing hotels and guest houses to change use, this does not promote tourism."

Falmouth and Helston Police have also issued a warning about anti-social behaviour in the area.

They tweeted: "Lots of ASB at Gyllyngvase last night! Evidence is being sought to prosecute those involved. Do you want a criminal record?

"Do you want your child to be criminalised? Speak to your child if involved or know who. This behaviour will not be tolerated."

Meanwhile, one user on Tripadvisor said: "Great beach ruined by intimidating gangs of students and rowdy behaviour. Like a stag do on the sand."

Another commented: "Is Gyllingvase beach the worst in Cornwall? We think so. Maybe we went on a bad day? Certainly within distance of people that think it’s ok to swear and smoke their 'stuff' in front of young children. You move, similar group of people in the next spot too."

Others were more positive with one writing: "First time in the sea at a UK beach for about ten years – freezing but worth it!

"Lovely beach, clean, quiet, well maintained, good facilities – and excellent sourdough bread from the beach cafe! Perfect for young children and their first experience in the waves."
