Nightclub ‘massacre’ leaves ’13 dead’ as gunmen spray bullets into crowd

An armed gang has killed more than a dozen people in a mass shooting inside a nightclub in Mexico, according to reports.

One local media report said 13 people had been shot dead at the club in the city of Salamanca, while another said the death toll stood at 14.

At least seven people were injured as the attack unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning, creating scenes of terror and chaos as revellers ran for their lives.

Reports said the gunmen arrived in a convoy of trucks just after midnight and began spraying bullets inside the club called La Playa, leaving a bloody scene.

Heavily-armed soldiers and police officers rushed to the scene of the attack as paramedics battled to save some of the victims.

The wounded survivors were rushed to a number of hospitals in the city.

A search for the killers has been launched.

Authorities have not yet commented on a suspected motive for the attack.

The Mexican army and state security forces responded to the shooting.

Home to about 260,000 people, Salamanca is in the state of Guanajuato, northwest of the capital Mexico City.
