The Brooklyn family of an Ithaca College student stabbed to death at a Cornell University frat party is suing the Ivy League school for $20 million, claiming that inadequate security contributed to their son’s death.
The suit was filed Thursday by Katia Toussaint on behalf of Anthony Nazaire, the 19-year-old Ithaca College sophomore who was killed Aug. 28, 2016, when a large brawl broke out following an orientation week party at Willard Straight Hall on the Cornell campus.
The bash was “improperly supervised, staffed, and policed,” the Brooklyn Supreme Court suit alleges.
“You take your kid out a neighborhood, and you do your best to send him to a good, proper college to make something out of himself, and he comes back in a body bag?” Toussaint, who raised her son in East Flatbush, said at the time.
Nagee Green, a 24-year-old upstate man, was convicted in the stabbing death and sentenced in November to 20 years to life in prison.
Along with Cornell, the defendants include Omega Psi Phi fraternity, which hosted the event.
Cornell Vice President for University Relations Joel M. Malina said: “Anthony Nazaire and his family remain very much in the thoughts of the Cornell University community. As with all active litigation, we are not able to offer comment while the case is pending.”
The family’s lawyer, along with the fraternity, declined to comment.
