Millennials swapping traditional Christmas decorations for UNICORNS and mermaids

Rudolph, Santa and the Nutcracker are set to be swapped for unicorns, llamas and even mermaids.

Research undertaken by American Express Small Shop found nearly half of the UK's 27 million homes will ditch traditional ornaments in favour of bizarre alternatives.

Worryingly, it is also thought tinsel and baubles could be whisked away and replaced by rainbow cakes and rockets.

Topping the 'alternative Christmas decoration list' are woodland animals such as squirrels and badgers.

Other decorations include dogs, proescco bottles, flamingos and dinosaurs.

One small business enjoying the trend for more unusual and quirky Christmas decorations is home and giftware store Sass & Belle.

Creative Director, Tonton Pelczynski, said he had noticed an increase of non-traditional decorations.

He said: "The younger generations want to create an experience for family and friends that gives them a chance for playful self-expression."

"What better way than to fill your Christmas tree with unicorns and mermaids?

"We stock everything from avocados in Santa hats, to llamas bearing gifts – all perfect for festive social posts.

"Forget red, gold and green, make way for pink on your tree this year as Christmas gets a millennial makeover."

Meanwhile, the research also discovered that most Brits think December 1st is the most acceptable day to put up Christmas decorations.
