Met Office ‘danger to life’ warning in one region over rain due before heatwave

Brits could see up to six inches of rain fall in just 24 hours with a risk of flooding and danger to life just days ahead of the ‘Indian Summer’.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for today and tomorrow.

Forecasters warn that over the next 12 hours there could be between 80-100mm rain falling over some spots in western Scotland.

And within 24 hours this could increase to 150mm – almost the average monthly amount of rain for the region in October.

This will be in addition to 100mm of rainfall that has already fallen south west of Glasgow over the last 36 hours, a Met Office forecaster told Mirror Online.

She added: "With that, there’s a risk of landslides.

"It’s quite a lot of rain to fall in a short space of time.

"200mm is the average (amount of rain) a month in western Scotland – so we would be nearing the average monthly total (in just 24 hours)."

The Met Office says that over the next couple of days ‘there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings’.

Forecasters add ‘there is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.’

Flooding could also lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

There is also the risk of delays and cancellations to train and bus services amid the weather conditions, the Met Office says.

But the unsettled conditions come ahead of the start of a stretch of sunshine,as Britain is set for its hottest October day in seven years this week.

Warm air from the Canary Islands will bring higher temperatures than Portugal during a 12-day Indian summer.

The Met Office has forecast up to 25C on Wednesday and Thursday – 11C above the average high.

Even the North is due 21C and over 23.6C would beat anything since 29.9C recorded in Gravesend, Kent, on October 1, 2011.

The warm spell will continue through the weekend and most of next week.

Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze added: “Don’t put the BBQ away – it’s summer’s last hurrah.”

The "last hurrah" will be hotter than parts of Portugal, with some places in the UK expected to be 10C warmer than usual by mid-week.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: “A slow moving band of frontal rain will affect northern and western areas through the beginning of the week, bringing the risk of flooding across western Scotland, whilst central and southern areas will be mostly dry but cloudy.

“Wednesday will be dry with sunny spells."

And the above-average temperatures may be set to continue.

The forecaster added that warmer weather was likely to persist across northern Europe through to the end of the month with higher pressure remaining semi-stationary over the Finland and north-west Russia, combined with lower pressure in the west.

This would lead to above-average confidence in forecasts for warmer-than-normal weather.
