'Mastermind' behind £50million Tamara Ecclestone burglary is arrested in Italy

THE alleged mastermind in the £50million Tamara Ecclestone burglary has been arrested in Italy.

Jugoslav Jovanovic was held on behalf of Scotland Yard cops probing London jewellery raids.

Jovanovic, 23, is said to have led the “Band of Gold” who targeted the F1 heiress last Christmas.

Italian police sources allege Jovanovic, of east European gypsy origin, used false documents to travel from his villa near Rome for UK break-ins.

He is held at a high-security jail there after armed cops raided the seaside home as he slept.

Items allegedly stolen from Tamara's home on December 13 last year include a £300,000 pair of rare 18-carat diamond earrings and a Louis Vuitton bag.

Scotland Yard confirmed a 23-year-old man had been held and added: “Extradition proceedings will follow.”

Several others have already been charged over the break-ins.

Alessandro Maltese, 44, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court last week after also being arrested in Italy and flown back to Britain.
