Man dies after ‘fight’ outside bar in Cardiff city centre as police launch murder investigation

  • Locals said they saw a man fall to the floor and the streets ‘covered in blood’

A murder probe has been launched after a man died in a Cardiff city centre attack in the early hours of this morning.

Officers were called to St Mary’s Street, the Welsh capital’s main clubbing street,  at around 4.50am after reports of an assault, South Wales Police said. 

Vicky Thomas, 36, of Riverside, Cardiff, said her friends spotted the victim fall to the floor.

Forensic teams are at the scene on St Mary Street today and a large cordon remains in place.

Vicky said: ‘A couple of my friends were sleeping on the street last night. I used to be homeless, but I’ve been housed.

‘They saw it. They saw the man fall to the floor. They said it happened so quickly.

‘There was blood on the street. This morning I’ve seen the forensics team putting things in bags. It’s getting dangerous on the streets.’

Staff from a nearby shop said they saw a man being given CPR at around 5am, before he was taken in an ambulance. 

South Wales Police are appealing for any witnesses to the attack. 

A police spokeswoman said: ‘A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Cardiff city centre during the early hours of this morning.

‘Significant police enquiries are on-going in the area, the deceased man has not yet been formally identified.

‘A number of officers and the police helicopter continue to be in the area and a number of cordons remain in place while investigations continue.’
