Lidl bit cheeky! Discount supermarket takes festive swipe at rivals M&S and Waitrose with ad campaign pointing out price differences on Christmas food

  • They poke fun at Marks & Spencer and Waitrose over prices of items such as smoked salmon and mince pies

Lidl has taken a swipe at rival supermarkets with its latest advertising campaign spelling out the price difference between some of this year’s festive offerings.

The brazen posters – situated within 100 yards of the opposition stores – feature the adverts of their rivals with Lidl’s cheaper prices splashed in red and white across the front.

They poke fun at retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Waitrose, claiming items such as smoked salmon and mince pies are much cheaper at the German discount brand.

Ryan McDonnell, commercial director at Lidl UK said: ‘Our Deluxe range offers customers the best value and quality in the market and these ads are all about us getting that message out there.

‘Shopping anywhere else means customers are paying more than they need to for great Christmas products.’

The outdoor adverts, which appear across Britain from today, feature the tongue-in-cheek tone with which the brand has become synonymous. They have been pictured in Surrey and South West London this morning.

As well as the launch of its ‘Upgrade Your Christmas’ campaign, Lidl posted an advert of the Yamaha YPT-244 piano, following the release of Sir Elton John’s advert for John Lewis, with the line ‘It’s a Lidl bit funny’.
