Musician John Legend will help promote a controversial plan to bail out teens and women — some accused of violent crimes — from city jails, according to law-enforcement sources.
Legend will use an upcoming Central Park concert to draw attention to the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights foundation, which plans to spring some 300 people starting as early as Monday in a bid to promote bail reform.
The singer, who has for years advocated clearing out overcrowded jails, is playing the Global Citizen concert on Sept. 29.
Law enforcement sources say that’s where Legend will advocate for the bailout. A rep for the festival would not confirm or deny that Legend will use the show to drum up support for the foundation.
“The Global Citizen Festival uses the power of citizen-action to leverage public policy changes in support of the world’s poor. We are not a fundraiser. Tickets for our events are free for those who take social good actions across areas like gender equality, education, global health and foreign aid in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” rep Andrew Kirk said in a statement.
Legend’s reps and the RFK foundation did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
