Jeff Flake will introduce bill to protect Mueller investigation

Lame duck GOP Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona said Thursday that he and Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Maryland would introduce legislation to protect special counsel Robert Mueller.

“When the Senate convenes next week, @ChrisCoons and I will ask for unanimous consent to bring the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, to a vote on the Senate floor. After the firing of The AG, it is more important than ever to protect the Special Counsel,” Flake tweeted.

Prior efforts to pass such legislation failed, so the fate of the bill is unclear with the GOP still holding a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

But Maine Sen. Susan Collins also said that the Trump administration should not interfere in Mueller’s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“It is imperative that the Administration not impede the Mueller investigation. I’m concerned Rod Rosenstein will no longer be overseeing the probe. Special Counsel Mueller must be allowed to complete his work without interference—regardless of who is AG.” she tweeted Wednesday.

Mueller’s fate became unclear after President Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replaced him with Matthew Whitaker, who has repeatedly slammed Mueller’s probe and will now oversee it.
