A skip lorry driver won fans online today after he was filmed berating one of the climate protesters bringing London to a standstill.

The Extinction Rebellion group who have occupied Waterloo Bridge and Oxford Circus in the last week today marched on Parliament in their second week of demos.

But a driver caught in tailbacks when police closed roads for the march said they were hitting ordinary working people and wasting police resources.

In footage shot by an LBC reporter, he said: ‘We are sitting idle with their engines on. How is that helping? You’re making vehicles, trucks, stop in traffic. I’m trying to earn my money like everyone else is. All it’s doing is obstructing normal people.

‘Go stand outside Whitehall. You don’t need to do this. Separate and go there. Look how many people it’s affecting. The police are on cuts as it is and look how many police there is… if I had it my way I’d carry on going.’

Scores of police were required to keep the demonstrators from causing too much disruption to Parliament Square

The protester claimed they were grateful to police for facilitating the protests.

The driver’s comments came as police revealed they have needed to draft in more than 10,000 officers over the last ten days to police the ongoing protests.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ‘As of Monday, 22 April approximately 10,200 Metropolitan Police Service officers have been deployed as part of the operation surrounding the Extinction Rebellion protests.

‘To ensure the prevention of widespread disruption over the Bank Holiday weekend, the Met was supported by an additional 350 officers from neighbouring forces between Saturday, 20 April and Monday, 22 April.

‘These officers will continue to support the policing operation throughout today, Tuesday 23 April and will then return to their respective forces.’

Former Met detective chief superintendent Gerry Campbell tweeted: ‘This level of policing is not sustainable in any way. It will also have an impact on preventing & tackling #Stabbings #ViolentCrime’

More than 1,000 people have been arrested during climate change protests which started on Monday April 15.  The action has seen Waterloo Bridge and Oxford Circus blocked and a ‘die in’ at the Natural History Museum.

Police have told protesters to stick to the terms of the protest after chaos in many areas of the capital last week

The group is turning its attention to Parliament today after shutting down Waterloo Bridge and Oxford Circus last week

The group, who are camped in Marble Arch, were split yesterday over whether to continue their action or move to ‘political negotiations’.

But the faction calling for further protests seem to have prevailed and the group marched on Parliament this morning.

Scotland Yard has said protesters at Parliament Square must leave a designated area by 11.59pm on Tuesday and warned: ‘Any organiser or person taking part in the protest failing to comply with these conditions or inciting others not to comply with them will be committing an offence and will be liable to arrest.’

The Metropolitan Police said 1,065 people had been arrested in connection with the demonstrations by 10am on Monday, while 53 of those had been charged.
