Bold moment a hero bar owner tackles knife-wielding burglar to the ground after burglar alarm triggered an alert on his mobile phone

This is the awe-inspiring moment a heroic bar owner tackles a knife-wielding burglar to the ground after he caused £3,000 worth of damage.

Alex Grundy, 34, owns the bar called Cafe Stella in Leigh, Greater Manchester, with his wife Zoe Grundy, 39. 

He said he was at home in bed on the night of the break in and got an alert on his phone because the burglar alarm at the bar had gone off.

Mr Grundy said: ‘I headed over and the bar owner from next door was also outside. 

‘We went inside and the damage was done. Bottles of gin missing, cash missing. 

‘Then I heard the back doors so ran through and there he was.’ 

The burglar turned out to be a well-known thief in the area called Lee Greensmith.

Mr Grundy said: ‘Once we stopped him, we carried him to the front and the police arrived within five minutes’

Earlier in the evening footage shows Greensmith breaking into the bar with what appears to be a crowbar and smashing a slot machine.  

Mr Grundy said: ‘Once we stopped him, we carried him to the front and the police arrived within five minutes.’

Greensmith was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at Bolton Crown Court for carrying a bladed article in a public space and burglary with intent to steal.
