‘Happy’ student ‘collapsed and died days after moving into university halls’

A ‘happy and friendly’ student died just four days after moving into university halls after her housemates found her collapsed in her bathroom, an inquest heard.

Abigail Hall, 18, had just moved to Sheffield Hallam University to start her degree, but had been vomiting and suffering from stomach pains, the hearing was told.

She had been complaining of the pains for three days before she collapsed in the bathroom of her bedroom at the Trigon student accommodation.

A housemate of Abigail’s, Agata Paliwada, had been checking on her during her illness, but on September 23 found the young woman unconscious in the bathroom.

Abigail, from Doncaster South Yorkshire, died shortly after, The Star reports.

The day before her death, Abigail’s parents, Charlotte and Mark Hall, had taken her to a walk-in centre, Sheffield Coroner’s Court heard.

Dr Thomas Pollak asked Abigail about her vomiting and stomach aches, before prescribing Buscopan for a suspected virus or the beginning of appendicitis, it was said.

She enrolled in university the following day, but died shortly after.

Speaking in court about the moment she found Abigail collapsed in university halls, her housemate Agata said: "She wasn’t in her bed, and I thought maybe her parents had come and got her. As I was walking away, I saw the light on her bathroom, I looked in the bathroom. She was there. She looked unconscious."

Agata and other students called for an ambulance and provided CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Despite the efforts of medics when they arrived at the scene, Abigail died shortly after.

The primary cause of death was recorded as Aspiration Pneumonitis, where foreign material is ingested into the lungs .

The secondary cause of death was recorded as idiopathic gastroenteritis.

It was also noted that Abigail suffered internal internal bleeding – which a pathologist said was consistent with someone who had been repeatedly vomiting.

We previously reported how the young woman’s heartbroken boyfriend Josh was teaching tennis in Corfu when he heard the news.
