Half-term highs of 18C to be replaced by Arctic blast as snow hits by weekend

Make the most of the warm weather this week, as the first snow is forecast for the weekend.

Temperatures are set to stay at an unseasonably high 18C in many parts of the UK until midweek, while many kids are enjoying their half term break.

But an Arctic blast is on the way bringing snow, galeforce winds and wintry showers for Scotland and the North by the end of Friday.

The mercury is set to fall to 8C in the North and 10C in the South.

The south, including areas of Kent, basked in temperatures of 19C yesterday.

Met Office forecaster Luke Miall said: “The message is make the most of it while it lasts.

“For the start of half term, there will be a lot of dry weather and it will be warmest by mid week with temperatures of 17-18C and some pretty decent sunny spells.

“But an Arctic Maritime Air Mass is coming down by Friday and we will see a plunge in the temperatures bringing cold winds across the UK.

“It will be much colder and in the North you will see it go down to around 8C and 10C in the South.”

The warmest weather will mainly be around southern parts of England and Wales. Meteorologist Sarah Kent warned the change in temperature would come as a ‘shock to the system’ for many.

“It will be time to get the woolly hats and jumpers out,” she added.

UK 7-day forecast

Today (Monday): Bright start for many, except Scotland, where it will be cloudier with more in the way of persistent rain here along with some spells on the heavy side. Elsewhere, a dry day with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud cover. Windy in the north.

Tomorrow and Wednesday: Dry day with sunny spells at times. After a misty start to the day on Wednesday it will be mostly cloudy though dry for many. Rain and winds across Scotland will ease as the day wears on.

Friday to Sunday

Much colder weather will establish itself across all parts by the end of Friday. Strong northerly winds, touching gale force in parts of the north.

These will blow in plenty of showers, turning wintry, especially across the high ground.
