The man was left with a head injury after the shooters opened fire in the suburb of Erdington.
One resident, who wished to stay anonymous, told Birmingham Live: “There was a shooting last night in Tedbury Crescent, Erdington.
“Guys on mountain bikes stopped and shot at a person having a smoke out the front of his house.”
Cops said the man suffered a minor head injury.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Police were called to reports of a gun being fired in Tedbury Crescent, Erdington, at just before 8.50pm last night.
"On arrival officers found a man in his 30s with a minor head injury. Enquiries about what caused this injury are still being carried out."
