A sheriff’s deputy in Georgia is facing murder charges for allegedly gunning down a 26-year-old man during an off-duty domestic dispute, police said.
Winford “Trey” Terrell Adams III, a 32-year-old deputy with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested early Monday in the death of Benjamin Lloyd Cloer, who was found shot several times in Clarke County late Sunday, Athens-Clarke County police said.
Cloer, 26, later died at a hospital from his injuries, police said.
Adams, who was in plainclothes at the time of the shooting, was taken into custody at the scene. He was charged with murder after an investigation, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Geof Gilland said.
Investigators are declining to say what led to the fatal dispute or the relationship between Adams and Cloer. That information will be contained in an incident report to be released in coming days, Gilland said.
Adams’ employer, meanwhile, acknowledged his arrest on social media, saying it was a “sad day” for all law enforcement officers.
“Please, please say a prayer for the MCSO family and the family of the victim,” the department posted on Facebook.
Adams, of Athens, remained in custody at the Clarke County Jail on a second-degree murder charge. No bond amount had been set, jail records show. It’s unclear if he’s hired an attorney.
