Four thirsty puppies ‘dance’ around in a circle as they all lap up water from a bowl at the same time

Four parched puppies were caught on camera moving around in a circle and wagging their tails as they drank from the same bowl.
Dog handler Valentyna Tolpiha had just given her adorable bull terrier puppies some water – and, as this footage shows, they were clearly all thirsty.
Walking around the bowl excitedly, the quartet couldn’t hide their happiness as they turned anti-clockwise – bringing to mind the canine equivalent of a Catherine wheel.

Valentyna, from Kiev, Ukraine, said: ‘I have been dealing with bull terriers for many years and they are really funny dogs.
‘I would even call them clowns and these puppies really deserved it.’
Dogs drink by smashing their tongues against the water to create water columns, which feed into their mouths.
Canines, and cats, have large jaws and ‘incomplete cheeks’ typical of a predatory quadruped, which allows them to open their mouths wide to deliver killer blows.
But what makes hunting possible also makes drinking using suction impossible.

Unable to seal their cheeks completely, there is no way for a dog to suck up water – unlike humans, who have ‘complete’ cheeks, which allow us to create negative pressure and suck water into our mouths.
When a dog withdraws its tongue from water, it creates a significant amount of acceleration – roughly five times that of gravity – that creates the water columns that feed up into its mouth.
The columns of water ‘pinch off’ and detach from the water bath primarily due to gravity, researchers at Virginia Tech and Purdue University found in 2014.
Dogs are smart enough to close their mouths just before the water column collapses back to the bath, allowing them to drink.
