Fotis Dulos’ condition is “dire” and he’s under police protection in the hospital following his suicide attempt, his lawyer said Wednesday.
Lawyers convened in Stamford Superior Court for a bail hearing in the Greek real-estate developer’s murder and kidnapping case — a day after he was found clinging to life inside a car in the garage of his Farmington mansion.
“Candidly, his medical condition is dire,” his attorney Norm Pattis told reporters after the brief hearing. “Family members of his will arrive in New York tonight and we will await word from physicians about what is reasonable to expect.”
Pattis also said “the situation is grim.”
If and when Dulos — who is currently receiving treatment at Jacobi Medical Center in The Bronx — is well enough to return to court, he’ll face re-arrest, Judge Gary White ruled.
Police said Dulos attempted to kill himself via carbon monoxide poisoning Tuesday around the same time he was due in court to learn whether his $6 million bail would be revoked. Dulos had been free since Jan. 9.
The bond was in question after the company that backed it, Palmetto Surety, raised concerns over “imperfections in the collateral” provided by Dulos — namely his residences at 4 Jefferson Crossing in Farmington and 61 Sturbridge Hill Road in New Canaan, according to new court papers.
Both homes are in foreclosure, while the New Canaan property was apparently overvalued by about $325,000.
The judge did not rule Wednesday on whether to revoke Dulos’ bail.
Pattis would not speculate on what led Dulos to attempt suicide or say whether he left a suicide note.
“I can’t speculate on what led him to do what he apparently did,” the lawyer said. “We had no indication that this was possible and we are as shocked as you are by this.”
The 52-year-old luxury-home builder is charged with the kidnapping and murder of his estranged wife and mother of his five children, Jennifer Dulos, who was last seen May 24.
