Thousands of dedicated fans to the Peaky Blinders swarmed into the first official festival for the show in Digbeth, Birmingham Today.
The first official ‘Digbeth Fayre’ transported fans of the show, who were clad in the gang’s proper attire, back into the world of post-war Birmingham, complete with flat caps – albeit without the razor blades.
Over the next two days, fans of the show will be treated to live music, headlined by Liam Gallagher who will be joined by the musicians, including the mind behind the musical score of season 5, Anna Calvi.
‘There is god, and there are the Peaky Blinders’: Crowds have massed in Digbeth, Birmingham as the first official Peaky Blinders festival began today
Despite highs of 21 degrees Celsius in the centre of Birmingham, dedicated fans still donned overcoats in homage to their favourite characters
One fan of the show made the look her own swapping the typically darker waistcoat for lighter colours and opting for a silver watch chain instead of the more traditional gold
The festival first began life unofficially, after fans clubbed together to create their own version, sadly the end result was lacklustre with many complaining about over-crowding.
Following fan disappointment and spotting an opportunity a new official festival was suggested. On the new festival writer Steven Knight was previously quoted as saying: ‘I wanted to put together a festival sanctioned by us but not to comment on anybody else’s attempt.
On the future of his hit TV series, Knight said he expects to take his long-form series to the cusp of the Second World War by the final series, then move to the big screen.
Ever loyal: Eldest brother and right hand to his brother Tommy, Arthur Shelby has wrestled with his own morality over the past few seasons of the show, with fans wondering if it may soon cost him his wife, Linda Shelby
The motives of Michael Gray remain a mystery as questions still arise as to his loyalty to the head of the Peaky Blinders gang, Tommy Shelby
The stars were joined by headline act and fan of the show, Liam Gallagher, who is due to perform live alongside other musicians behind the show’s soundtrack
He said: ‘I’m writing series six at the moment. That’s almost done.’
‘Then I’m going to do series seven, then I’m looking at spin-offs, maybe a movie.
‘It’s up to us. It’s up to the people involved.’
Knight said he would make a decision on the future film version along with star Cillian Murphy and producer Caryn Mandabac.
Fans were left screaming at television sets after the fate of Linda Shelby (played by Kate Phillips) was left in question at the end of episode 4 last week
The writer has said he would likely steer clear of a prequel, as given the timescale it would end up being a First World War film.
He said: ‘The problem with prequel is you’re limiting yourself as to where it can go.
‘You can’t kill a character who can show up in the series.’
As the fifth season continues, Tommy Shelby’s fate is becoming more intertwined with this series’s main antagonist, Sir Oswald Mosley
Knight spoke at the Peaky Blinders Legitimate festival in Digbeth, where former Oasis frontman Gallagher made an appearance, being a fan of the show. The writer is reluctant to allow him a role on the show itself.
The show creator added: ‘He said ‘if you do my video, I’ll do the festival’.
‘In terms of appearances we’ve always had a lot of incoming interest. What I’m trying to not do is populate the scene with people who are known for other things, because I think it’s quite distracting.’
The fifth series has already shown the Shelby family fighting a cold-war on two fronts between rival Glaswegian gang: The Billy Boys and a fictionalised version of the British Union of Fascists, Sir Oswald Mosley.
The shows fifth episode will air on Sunday at 9pm on the last day of the festival.
