Family release heartbreaking pic of footie fan left in coma in hit-and-run as they beg driver to come forward

Football fan Robert Higgins is in a critical condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital following the incident on Genners Lane, Northfield, around 11.30pm on Tuesday, October 2.

His family told Birmingham Live that Mr Higgins has suffered a bleed on the brain, a fractured skull, six broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a broken nose in the horror incident.

No one has been arrested following the collision and now his niece Joanne Piotrowski has appealed to the driver to contact the police.

As the family keep a bedside vigil and "urge him to stay strong", Ms Piotrowski said: "Do the right thing and come forward and hand yourself in – it’s only going to make matters worse.

"My uncle is a lovely person. He’s so calm and collective. He keeps himself to himself. He’s a mad Aston Villa fan. He loves walking in the countryside and being on the seafront."

Ms Piotrowski said she was "shocked and devastated" after she was told of the incident and when she saw her uncle in hospital she "felt sick that someone could do that to another person".

She said the family have taken the brave decision to release the photo in order to urge anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said police are in the early stages of the investigation but are "keeping an open mind".

But police are unclear whether Mr Higgins was a pedestrian crossing the road before he was struck or if he was injured in the road before he was hit by a car, DS Hughes said.

He said: "I would urge anyone who knows anything or who was in the area at the time, to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency. In particular I would appeal to the driver of a light coloured 4×4 car which was at the location at the time to make contact."
