Ex-soldier, 42, dies in wife's arms after his 'heart stopped' in hotel pool

A BRIT dad-of-three died in his wife's arms after his 'heart stopped' while swimming on holiday in Greece.

Former soldier Simon Jones, 42, went for a swim to cool down after a day of sight-seeing on the island of Rhodes.

Shattered wife Daniella was told his "heart just stopped" as he swam lengths in the hotel pool.

Sister-in-law Tarah Morgan, 32, said: "Somebody pulled Simon out of the pool and tried to work on him and call the ambulance.

"They put him on the floor and worked on him for 45 minutes but there was nothing they could do."

Daniella and bus driver Simon, of Tonypandy, Rhondda, South Wales, were on the last few days of their two-week holiday on the sunshine island.

Daniella, 29, said: "He was amazing, a really good man and a good husband.

"He'd always call me his princess."

The couple met through their work at a coach tour company where she worked as a courier and Simon as a coach driver across Europe.

Daniella said: "I started working for Ferris Coaches and Simon said [to one of his colleagues] 'I'm going to marry that girl'.

"And we did end up getting married. When I first saw him I thought he was mad. We got married after two years."

Before becoming a coach driver, Simon, who had three children and two grandchildren from a previous relationship, served in the British Army with the Royal Logistics Corps.

His brother Damon said: "Simon was military crazy, he absolutely loved the military."

After leaving the Army, he worked in security at a number of clubs for several years around Cardiff and Barry.

Damon added: "It's fair to say that even after all of this time it's still hard to comprehend.

"He did have a heart murmur when he was younger and it was still ongoing, and he did have scans later on in life but it did seem like everything was alright."

Simon's funeral will be held on September 24 in Glyntaff Crematorium in Pontypridd, South Wales.
