The Sun can reveal that Home Secretary Sajid Javid has asked Cabinet colleagues to back the incendiary proposal with just days left until a possible ‘crash out’ on March 29.
Critics last night said it would enrage Europhile politicians and big business.
It comes two months after Theresa May waived a £65 fee for EU nationals ALREADY living in Britain who want to apply for ‘Settled Status’.
The Home Office in January revealed that in a No Deal, current free movement rules would end. They said new EU migrants coming to Britain would get a three month automatic right to stay.
They would then have to apply for a 36-month extension.
Under Mr Javid’s latest plans, this application process would cost £100, with families getting a £10 discount for a ‘group’.
One source last night said the plans would only encourage “illegal” immigration as EU nationals dodge the application process.
'CHAOS' FOR BUSINESSES
And they warned it would cause chaos for businesses, with bosses having no idea if an EU citizen was able to stay in Brexit Britain or not.
The Home Office last night said: “We do not comment on leaked documents.
“As we have set out, in the event of a No Deal, European temporary leave to remain is a practical measure to help us end free movement as soon as possible and transition to a new immigration system in 2021.”
The row comes as the Home Office separately today confirms that the EU settlement scheme for EU nationals seeking to gain permanent rights to live in Britain after Brexit will go live on March 30.
The scheme will allow 3.2 million EU nationals currently living in the UK to apply for a permanent right to live in Britain after Brexit.
Theresa May scrapped the £65 fee for the settlement scheme in January after suffering a humiliating Commons defeat for her Brexit deal.
In a statement on the Settlement Scheme, Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes said: “Protecting EU citizens’ rights remains our number one priority.
“We value the contribution they make to the social, economic and cultural fabric of the UK and we want them to stay.
“That is why we are making it as easy for them as possible to apply for the status they need, and without any fee.”
