French investigators believe an electrical short-circuit was most likely behind the massive blaze that ripped through Notre Dame cathedral, an official said Thursday.
The French judicial police official, who spoke anonymously about the investigation, seemed to confirm the prevailing theory that the inferno that toppled the Gothic masterpiece’s spire and reduced its centuries-old roof to cinders was not intentionally caused.
For safety reasons, investigators are still unable to begin sifting through the rubble inside the building in Paris, the official said. Meanwhile, workers are shoring up the 850-year-old monument with wooden planks.
