Donald Trump says a second summit with Kim Jong-un will happen ‘soon’ after North Korean dictator sent a ‘beautiful letter’

Speaking at the United Nations, Trump says the relationship with the country whose leader he branded last year as "Little Rocket Man" is much improved.

The President said today: "It was a different world. That was a dangerous time.

"This is one year later, a much different time. It’s going actually faster than anybody would understand.

"It looks like we'll have a second summit quite soon.

"As you know, Kim Jong Un wrote a letter – a beautiful letter – and asked me for a second meeting and we will be doing that."

Trump says Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is working out the details for the second Trump-Kim meeting.

The dictator requested a second date with Trump in a letter this month, and Trump confirmed, "we will be doing that".

The President is set to meet with South Korea's Moon Jae-in later today to discuss North Korea and trade details.

Moon is expected to convey to Trump a personal message from Kim delivered at their inter-Korean talks last week.

But Trump’s positivity about his budding relationship with Kim came a day after US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said she believed talk of a second summit was premature.

She told ABC This Week: "I think Secretary Pompeo needs to have a couple more conversations before the President meets with Kim again.”

Last week a loved up Kim embraced South Korean president Moon Jae-in as he arrived in North Korea for the pair's third summit this year.

Hundreds of people waving unification flags watched on as the two leaders greeted each other as friends at Pyongyang airport.

They later committed to an "era of no war".
