DONALD Trump Jr. and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle have taken aim at Democrats this Halloween, dressing up as the witch hunt the couple claim is coming after the president.
Trump Jr. said he and Guilfoyle "just couldn't resist" the costumes, which they donned a pair of Instagram snaps posted Thursday evening.
In the caption, the 41-year-old wrote: "Witch Hunt!!! Happy Halloween folks! With all the b******t the Democrats are throwing out there we just couldn’t resist."
The location of the image had been selected as "The Swamp" – a decades-old term that President Trump uses to refer to the systemic problems surrounding the federal government.
Witch hunt, meanwhile, is a term Trump senior has tweeted on numerous occasions, declaring the current impeachment proceedings "The Greatest Witch Hunt in American History!" earlier in the day Thursday.
Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle's costume choices came on a day that a divided House approved rules to guide the impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
While Trump blasted the decision as a "hoax," just two Democrats voted against the resolution, along with all Republicans, leading to a total count of 232 in favour and 196 against.
The first formal test of support for the impeachment probe showed Democrats have enough backing in the House to later bring formal charges – known as articles of impeachment – against Trump if they feel they have enough evidence.
House Democrats say Trump has abused his office for personal gain and jeopardised national security by asking Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky to investigate Trump's Democratic political rival Joe Biden, a former US vice president, and his son Hunter, who had served as a director for Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Biden is a leading candidate in the Democratic presidential nomination race to face Trump in the November 2020 election.
Thursday's snaps were not the first time Trump Jr. has made a Halloween post a talking point, either.
In 2017, he tweeted a photo of his daughter, Chloe, holding a bucket of candy and wrote that he would give half away to "some kid who sat at home" to teach her about "socialism."
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling even weighed in, tweeting: "Fill her bucket with old candy left by her great-grandfather, then explain that she has more because she's smarter than all the other kids."
CAPITOL COSTUME PARTY
One representative attending the impeachment proceedings was not going to allow Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle have all the fun, though, turning up to Congress in a Batgirl costume.
Representative Katie Porter, a Democratic congresswoman from Southern California, walked into the Capitol Thursday morning in full regalia – including a mask, cape and knee-high boots.
The congresswoman, who completed her look with an iced coffee and designer handbag, received both praise and scorn online for her antics.
According to reports, Porter dressed in more formal wear for a vote with the Financial Services Committee, but she did keep the mask on.
