Dad who tortured baby ‘taken hostage in jail and battered with tuna can in sock’

A father who beat his newborn son so badly that his legs had to be amputated was taken hostage in prison and beaten within an inch of his life, according to reports.

Tony Smith, who is serving a 10-year sentence at Swaleside Prison on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, was allegedly pounced on by two inmates who had been wrongly housed in the vulnerable prisoner wing.

Smith was reportedly tied to a chair and beaten with cans of tuna hidden inside a sock and metal poles, apparently leaving him with a fractured eye socket, broken ribs and a broken jaw.

A jail insider also said the alleged attackers also stamped on his body in the prison, known among offenders as "Stabside".

Smith was held in his cell and endured four hours of torture from the other inmates, according to reports.

A source told The Daily Star : "Prison guards managed to get them off in the nick of time – he’s lucky he didn’t die.

"The men are now in segregation pending an investigation as to how this happened.”

Heroin addict Smith and his parter Jody Simpson were jailed in February for 10 years following the horrific abuse on their son who was just weeks old.

He had been swung around by his ankles, causing his tiny bones to break.

Their son, also called Tony, was just 41 days old when he was taken to hospital and was fighting for his life with several fractures and septicaemia.

The baby survived but but both legs had to be amputated and he now faces a lifetime of disability.

His parents admitted that they didn’t take him to hospital when he became ill because they were waiting for a plumber to fix their boiler.

A prison service spokesperson said: “Staff resolved an incident involving three prisoners at HMP Swaleside on August 7.

"The incident has been referred to the police so it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

The baby has since been adopted by Paula Hudgell, 50, who is campaigning for tougher sentences for child neglect and abuse.

And she has spoken out after Simpson made a bid to be freed early from jail.

She said: “Jody left her son close to death and now she wants sympathy. She can’t accept her guilt for what she did to her own child.

“By appealing to have her sentence reduced shows she has no remorse.”

She added: “Both his parents deserve to rot in prison.”
