Marcus Bellamy, 41, and girlfriend Julie Williams, 42, were found at the Ely, Cardiff home – just weeks after the mother had told her daughter their relationship was coming to an end.
An inquest into the couple's death today heard they had started to date in January 2015 but the relationship had become "difficult" before their death in June this year.
Julie's daughter Gemma said she saw her mum at a family barbecue weeks before the tragedy.
She said: "She talked about the future and things she was looking forward to.
"She was talking about her relationship coming to an end with Marcus."
But the pair had a "difficult" relationship and struggled with addictions.
In a statement, Gemma said: "The relationship was difficult. There were incidents of violence.
"Marcus was very controlling. He would smash the flat up and destroy my mother's things."
The inquest heard Miss Williams took prescription medication and had previously struggled with alcohol.
Gemma said: "Marcus would take his own prescription medication and then take my mother's.
"At times he would take a month's worth of tablets in two days."
The court heard Mr Bellamy would buy drugs from a street dealer called "Tablet T."
But Gemma said she became worried when she had not heard from her mum.
She went to the flat in Ely, Cardiff, and saw two PCSOs standing at the door on the Sunday morning on June 24.
The inquest in Pontypridd continues.
