Commuters trying to avoid huge puddle is the most gloriously British thing

This hilarious video of commuters trying to avoid a huge puddle may be one of the most British things you’ll ever see.

Rush hour travellers were forced to clamber over chairs to leave a station this evening after heavy rains flooded the road outside.

People leaving Hammersmith tube station in west London were provided with the makeshift ‘bridge’ by staff at a nearby branch of Pret-a-Manger, who later tweeted to say "we chair-ish our customers."

Transport for London urged passengers to avoid the station after inches of rain fell in under an hour as the rush hour got underway.

Underground staff eventually decided to shut the station due to fears of overcrowding as so many people were trapped in the exit by rising water.

Thunderstorms swept across south east England on Tuesday, bringing an abrupt end to Britain’s month-long heatwave prompting a severe weather warning from the Met Office.

The “be aware” alert warning of frequent lightning, heavy rain – up to 30mm in an hour in some places – large hail and strong gusts was removed in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

But heavy rains battered London for most of Thursday, causing flash flooding in several parts of the capital.
