At the start of the clip, a van pushes into a protester on a moped, causing him to collapse to the ground as onlookers shout around them

The driver then jumps out of his vehicle and approaches the rider – who had been taking part in a protest across the city on February 1.

But soon, the motorist retreats to his car as onlookers shout ‘stop it’ and ‘let go of him’ at crowds approaching his open window.

Before long, the van driver moves his vehicle forward again as another protester stands ahead of the van with her arms raised.

He stops and exits his car, but as he does, an onlooker in a black helmet tackles him.

A man in a blue jacket then appears to break the van’s driver side window.

A few minutes later, someone shouts ‘he’s got a hammer’, and a man in a black puffer jacket is seen grasping a bright orange tool.

People appear to attempt to reason with him as he stands with a woman near to the white van – as police officers arrive at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called at around 1330hrs on Friday, 1 February, to a report of a disturbance in Upper Street, N1.

‘Officers attended the location, where a number of people on mopeds / motorcycles had been staging a protest.

‘Some of those in attendance left prior to the arrival of police. Officers spoke with the driver of a van, which had a side window broken.

‘The van driver did not wish to make any criminal allegations. There has been no arrest.’

A Deliveroo spokesperson said: ‘Deliveroo condemns the behaviour of these individuals, which is utterly unrepresentative of hardworking riders who were out on Friday bringing people their meals.

‘The activists who organised and stoked this protest must take responsibility for this appalling incident.

‘We have already identified one rider involved, have ended their contract and have passed the matter onto the police.’

The protest, supported by the Industrial Workers of the World, called for an ‘end to unfair dismissals’ and a minimum pay of £5 per delivery with an extra £1 paid every mile in the protest, IWGB said.

Dom, a Deliveroo worker and IWGB official, said: ‘Across the country riders are all experiencing the same problems like lower order fees and long waits at restaurants.

‘These issues have been repeatedly raised with Deliveroo but our members recognise the only way to get improvements is to act collectively.

‘It’s been too easy for the company to ignore us individually.’
