Boris Johnson on course to win leadership race by a landslide as 2 in 3 members want him as next PM

BORIS Johnson is on course to win a landslide victory in the Tory leadership race – as two in three voters want him as PM.

The frontrunner is miles ahead of rival Jeremy Hunt in the latest poll of Conservative members, it was revealed today.

ConservativeHome reported that Boris has 66 per cent of the vote, and Jeremy Hunt 30 per cent.

Four per cent voted for "other" as they didn't like either one.

In the last survey – when several other contenders were in the running – Boris secure 62 per cent of the vote.

He's leading on the Foreign Secretary by a whopping 36 points now.

The gap has closed between the two men in the last week, however, a fresh survey for the Evening Standard showed.

Boris is still ahead but Mr Hunt has gained from increased exposure, Ipsos MORI found.

And support for Boris is even up on last week.

59 per cent of Tories think that Boris has what it takes to be the next PM, compared to 53 per cent for Mr Hunt.

And more them think he will get a better Brexit deal too.

The news will be a relief to his campaign team who feared that the row he had with girlfriend Carrie last week could damage his chances of getting to No10.

She was reported to be heard shouting "get off me" and "get out of my flat" in the argument, and Boris has tried to brush it under the carpet.

He's gone on a media blitz in recent days to divert attention away from the row.

Today he said in an interview with ConservativeHome that everyone in his Cabinet would be expected to sign up to his pledge to leave the EU by October 31 – deal or no deal.

If they won't, they'll be booted out of his top team.

However, last night he insisted the chances of leaving without anything in place were "a million to one" and he was certain he could negotiate an exit.

It was revealed today that the pair will go head to head for a live debate in front of Sun readers on July 15 at 7pm.

Tonight both candidates will appear in front of Tories for another live hustings in Bournemouth.

The pair are also set to campaign in Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

Boris' rival Mr Hunt was seen chomping down on an ice cream on the beach with his wife, Lucia.

Today anti-Brexit People's Vote campaigners will launch a new advert featuring a picture of Boris in the pocket of Nigel Farage.

That's despite the fact that last night Boris ruled out working with the Brexit Party leader to get out EU exit done.

A spokesperson said: "Nigel Farage has got Boris Johnson in his pocket. Farage’s extremist vision of Brexit has been adopted by both candidates to become the next Prime Minister of our country, but it’s Boris Johnson, the front-runner, who is increasingly talking up the Farageist vision of a destructive No Deal, ‘Do or Die’."

The advert will be wheeled around Bournemouth ahead of tonight's hustings.

Ballots will go out in the first week of July to members so they can cast their votes for who they want to be the next leader and PM.

And the final result will be announced on July 23.

Theresa May will stay in office until then, and will officially go to the Queen to resign on July 24.
