Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is giving a national address which is being carried live by all the major television networks.
Here’s a taste of his opening remarks:
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, a historic reign and a long life devoted to duty, family, faith and service has come to an end. This is a morning of sadness for the world. For the Commonwealth and all Australians. It is a day of profound sadness and grief for the royal family who have lost a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. The person who, for so long, was a person of strength.
Our hearts go out to the people of the United Kingdom, who mourn today, knowing they will feel they have lost part of what makes their nation whole. It is a time of mourning for the people in Britain, across the Commonwealth and, indeed, around the world. There is comfort to be found in Her Majesty’s own words ‘grief is the price we pay for love’.
This is a loss we feel deeply in Australia. Queen Elizabeth II is the only reigning monarch most of us have known, and the only one to ever visit Australia. Over the course of a remarkable seven decades, Her Majesty was a rare and reassuring constant amidst rapid change. Through the noise and turbulence of the years, she embodies and exhibited a timeless decency and enduring calm.
Her Majesty served our nation and the Commonwealth for 70 years. She is the longest reigning monarch in British history. And, remarkably, the second longest reigning monarch of a sovereign state in world history. Her life of faithful service will be remembered for centuries to come.
‘Never has there been a more dignified monarch,’ Dutton says
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has just released a statement about the Queen’s passing.
Here’s what he had to say:
Never in modern history has there been a more dignified monarch, a more dutiful leader, or a more decent human than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
An extraordinary life which touched so many has sadly come to an end. The last page has been inked on an exceptional reign.
Dutton went on to describe the Queen as “gentle, kind, and much-loved”.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II lived through the pivotal events of the 20th and 21st centuries – wars and conflicts, depression and recession, the end of empire and decolonisation, the race to the moon and the attainment of civil rights, the brilliance of Olympic Games and the barbarity of terrorism.
She led Britain through the darkest of days and through the times of triumph.
‘End of an era’: Albanese’s statement in full
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II by saying today marks “the end of an era”.
“This time of mourning will pass, but the deep respect and warm regard in which Australians always held Her Majesty will never fade,” he said.

- The Commonwealth is in mourning following confirmation of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. She was 96. Her son, King Charles III, says her passing marks a great sadness. Our dedicated live blog, helmed by Latika Bourke, is available here.
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the late monarch “greeted each and every change with understanding, good grace and an abiding faith in the Australian people’s good judgement”. The PM is due to give a televised address before 6.30am AEST. Stay tuned.
- In other news, mandatory COVID-19 isolation will be cut from seven days to five from today. The changes apply to people who don’t have symptoms on their fifth day with the virus. Meanwhile, NSW will report its coronavirus numbers weekly from today. Victoria will soon follow.
- And the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia has rejected calls to resign.
