Why Friends guest star was "dying inside" filming love scenes with Jennifer Aniston

You’d think that appearing on Friends would be a barrel of laughs, but it’s fast-emerging that that’s not exactly the case. Take Kathleen Turner’s experience, for example.

Well, we can now add Tate Donovan to the list of uncomfortable Friends guest stars, as the actor has revealed that his time on the show was plagued with heartbreak.

Speaking to Us Weekly, Tate – who played Rachel’s brief love interest Joshua and who was also Jennifer Aniston’s one-time real-life fiancé – called his experience “really painful and tough”.

Reflecting on his “tricky” time as ‘Josh-wa’, Donovan said: “The only bummer was Jennifer and I were breaking up at the time.

“That was tricky to sort of act, and act like we are just meeting each other, and falling in love, or whatever, interested in each other, when we’re sort of breaking up. That was just tough.”

The OC actor also went on to reveal that the only reason Joshua appeared on the series for six episodes was because he and Jennifer “were breaking up”.

How different things could have been, eh.

Fortunately for Tate, he does have some positives to take away from the cult sitcom – despite, y’know, “dying inside”.

“Those six people were amazing to me,” he said. “They were fantastic… It was really ultimately a great experience of how people can treat you really well, and you still do your job even though you’re sort of dying inside.”

If you would like to watch Tate Donovan die inside on your TV screens, you’re in luck! Because Friends has just started airing on terrestrial TV for the first time in an age.
