The tradition of singing the Star-Spangled Banner before NFL games dates back to 1945, when the commissioner, Elmer Layden, ordered it. Now, almost 100 years later, let’s take a look at who will be singing the national anthem for the 2020 Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.
Who is singing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ for Super Bowl 54?
Pop artist, Demi Lovato will sing the National Anthem for our 2020 Super Bowl. She has quite a long history of singing the Star-Spangled Banner at major sporting events.
This Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will mark Lovato’s sixth time singing the national anthem in front of a major television audience, according to Fox News.
Her first time opening an NFL game with the anthem was a Thanksgiving Day game in 2008. She opened Game 5 of the MLB World Series in 2011, as well as Game 4 of the MLB World Series in 2012.
The two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter also opened Game 4 of the MLB World Series in 2015. Then she sang a televised anthem in a boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather in 2017.
With all of those renditions under her belt, it would be surprising if she missed any words.
Demi Lovato returned to the stage at the Grammys, after a 2-year hiatus
In July 2018, Lovato was rushed to the hospital after a near-fatal drug overdose. The singer then completed three months in rehab after she was released from the hospital in August 2018. Before the relapse, Lovato was sober for six years.
The 27-year-old singer returned to the stage for the first time since the incident to perform her single “Anyone” at the 2020 Grammys.
“What an unbelievable night,” Lovato wrote on Instagram after the award ceremony. “My first time back on stage in almost 2 years. So emotional for me. Thank you all for the love, support, and for sharing this moment with me. I love you all.”
What was Demi Lovato doing during her 18-month break from the stage?
Lovato took an “introspective year” off and spent a lot of time listening to music to help her recover. She also explained how writing new songs brought her back to life, according to an interview with US Weekly.
“I remember being in the hospital and listening to the song and it was about a week after I had been in the hospital and I was finally awake, and I just remember hearing back the songs I had just recorded and thinking, ‘If there’s ever a moment where I get to come back from this, I want to sing this song,’” she told Us before her Grammy appearance.
The singer also took time to travel. She relaxed at a resort in Bora Bora and took an inspirational trip to Israel.
“When I was offered an amazing opportunity to visit the places I’d read about in the Bible growing up, I said yes,” Lovato wrote on Instagram. “There is something absolutely magical about Israel. I’ve never felt such a sense of spirituality or connection to God…something I’ve been missing for a few years now. Spirituality is so important to me…to be baptized in the Jordan river – the same place Jesus was baptized – I’ve never felt more renewed in my life.”
She continues to share her feelings about what she went through in the past year with her followers on Instagram. Tune in at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, to see Lovato perform the Star Spangled Banner for Super Bowl 54.
